Cheap points wise in T1 & faction flavour.
Excellent buffer tank, excellent damage, fits for speed to approach & orbit targets.
5x T2 blasters melt targets under 6k range. The trick is surviving the burn towards your targets and pinning them down.
Being close range removes the most damaging effect of sensor damps, the ability to lock.
5x medium drones or 10x light drones, with a choice of damage, cap draining, ecm, damping, tracking disrupting, remote logistics or even sniping and webbing if you go for 2 large drones.
Vulnerable to Cap warfare as their guns & midslots require cap.
Missile Spam: because they will often charge head first into volleys, and missiles dont rely on tracking, negating the speed tank of a close range blaster orbit.
Smartbombs: If all the ships are orbiting you, you will damage every one with your smartbomb, smartbombs also remove their drones from the fight.
We all know a thorax based team has the ability to bring down very solid setups. I've done it myself vs the five in tourney 4 when they used an ishtar ecm & logistics setup. BOB famously lost their title reign to such a setup as well.
I personally think drones are the weapon of the tournament. Most ships carry them, and they are simply so versatile. Im a big fan of sending light drones after pesky frigates while focusing fire on another target. Those small frigates often make life hell with electronic warfare and are less likely to pack smartbombs.
However drones are easy to counter by outrunning them or their tracking, can be destroyed by conventional weapons, other drones and more importantly, smartbombs.
I'm kind of confused by your post here. OP asked for best ship of the tourney, and you kind of summed up the pros as well as cons of thoraxes and drones and how to use them, which most people in the tournament learned 3 months after they started playing.
I think Abbadons with support or largely BC gangs will be the winners. Using the Bastards and R.U.R. as examples. I basically think whoever has more DPS on the field will win. Some people are bringing E-War, but they die extremely fast typically, and most of the heavy hitters are also packing so much ECCM that they arent very effective...case and point my team! Once our 4 ewar support ships are dead, our remaining ishtars are simply not enough dps to break drakes faster than they break us.
So yeah, big passive high dps BS (nave mega, abbadon, hype, phoon) and high dps BC (harb, cane, brutix, drake).
Guess if I had to pick one ship overall to be favored, it would be the Harbinger. |
